UPDATE 22:00 12/29/11: Mushers are starting to come off their 8 hr mandantory layover at Alpine Lodge and have started heading back to Paxson the finish line tonight and early tomorrow. The first mushers should be arriving sometime around midnight and 2 am.
UPDATE 12:25 12/29/11: 6 mushers still on the loop traveling at a snails pace due to some deep snow in places, wind blown trails and overflow in spots. Trails are reported as poor. It is good the teams are taking it slow. Tempearture is -6 f with winds calm, scattered snow flurries today.
UPDATE 9:45 12/29/11 The 83 mile loop has slowed mushers down to a crawl (average speed 5.5 mph) Temps are -5 with winds at 15 mph gusting to 30. Brent Sass is the only musher to officially reach the first check point. Nine mushers have scratched.
UPDATE 19:45 12/28/11: Mushers have reached the Maclaren River and doing the loop around to Alpine Lodge. Temperature at Maclaren River is currently minus 3 f winds NNW at 12 mph. Historically the temperature on the river is 10 to 15 degrees cooler.
UPDATE 13:45 12/28/11: Wind blowing 45mp on Paxson Lake, low visibility. Soft trail, drifting and blowing snow. Teams are still crossing Paxson Lk
